Spend a spring morning in the park and learn about the natural world that makes West Virginia wild and wonderful. The St. Albans Parks and Recreation Department presents the 12th Annual Walk on the Wild Side Nature Hikes on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the St. Albans City Park Nature Trail, lower park area, and pool parking. This is a free community event, and all ages are welcome. Participants must register to win door prizes.
This year’s theme is Nature’s Wonders. The event focuses on West Virginia flora, fauna, environment, weather, and Appalachian culture. The goal is simple: bring together the best parts of the past eleven years and give families a fun way to learn outdoors.
Along the trail, presenters share information and hands-on activities about pollinators, birds, mammals, insects, wildflowers, mushrooms, forestry, hydrology, and conservation. Expect self-guided hikes with expert leaders available to share stories and answer questions.
Featured experience: Wings of Wonder – WV Birds of Prey (Three Rivers Avian Center).
Families can also enjoy crafts and activities for children and adults, door prizes, and take-home items such as tree seedlings and flower or vegetable seeds while supplies last. Food and beverages will be available on-site. Commemorative Blenko glass suncatchers and tee shirts will be available for purchase.
This event relies on grants, donations, and community support to offset costs. Donations received during the event help fund future Walk on the Wild Side events. The event is held rain or shine, with expected attendance of 200 to 300 participants.
